When Cali Morgan kicks off her perfect post-college summer in Lake Tahoe, she has everything she ever wanted: acceptance into a top law program, a gorgeous boyfriend, and an incredible summer planned with her best friend.

Confident about her place in the world, Cali makes it her mission to be her friend’s wingwoman and help her meet guys. What Cali doesn’t count on is running into Jaeger Lang, one of her older brother’s high school friends, or the sparks that fly when she’s around him.

Jaeger has changed, and it’s not just the added height and muscle. There’s something about him that’s deep and a little scarred. In spite of the changes, Jaeger becomes a top pick for her friend—if Cali can keep her hands off him.

But when Cali’s boyfriend dumps her and her carefully laid plans begin to unravel, she finds herself questioning what it is she truly desires. In the midst of doubts about her future, one thing is very clear: she wants Jaeger for her own. The question is, has her friend already fallen for him?

My Thoughts

Honestly, I dont know what I was expecting with Deep Blue, but Ms. Barnard definitely exceeded any preconceived expectations I mightve had.

Cali has a plan for the summer after graduating: work full time at a casino with her best friend and save up money for law school. Her relationship with her boyfriend is good and her future seems promising. Everything looks to be going good until it isnt. She gets dumped by her boyfriend and on top of that, Cali and her best friend grow further and further apart. It also doesnt help that she cant stop thinking about her older brothers best friend, and what started out as an easygoing summer is turning out to be anything but.

Cali was a really fun character to read about. Shes feisty, loyal, stubbornand isnt likely to take shit from anyone. Breaking up with Eric wasnt something that came totally out of nowhere, and she feels more embarrassed than anything. Just the same, she doesnt want to rush into anything with Jaeger. So she keeps him at arms length, until she just cant anymore. Jaeger has the whole moody, tortured artist thing going on. Hes reserved but if he puts his focus on you, then things get intense. Hes also fiercely loyal and straightforward. What a breath of fresh air! Jaeger isnt afraid to go after what he wants and he makes that abundantly clear with Cali.

Cali and Jaegers relationship was a pretty realistic one. They argue, they make up and they move on. There were a couple of times where Calis jealousy got a little annoying, but those instances few in between. Nevertheless, I was able to relate and sympathize with these characters. I did feel that  the events towards the end were a little strung out and maybe a bit unnecessary. Still, I could follow along, and Cali and Jaeger did eventually end up right where they belonged.

Im curious as to what will happen with Calis best friend, Gen and Lewis, as well as her brother Tyler, and Ill definitely be following up with these characters. Honest and sweet, Deep Blue is a perfect beach read!

About Jules Barnard

Jules Barnard is originally from the San Francisco Bay Area. She attended UC Davis, whose college landscape often finds its way into her New Adult novels. She has a Master’s degree and spent many an hour running statistical analysis, until she realized her favorite part of the job was writing reports. She decided to cut out the math and add in some hot guys, and so began her career as a novelist.

Jules is a Northern California native living on the coast with her husband and two children. She has no impulse control around cupcakes and credits herself with the ability to read while running on the treadmill or burning dinner.
